The CO2-based respirometer has been ideated for testing aerobic biodegradability of soil, compost and plastic materials. Two configurations are available: the basic configuration that consists of closed vessels with NIR CO2 sensors, and the ISO 14855-1 configuration (plastic biodegradability in controlled composting conditions). The latter can be arranged according to ASTM D 5338 (plastic biodegradability in controlled composting conditions, ISO 14852 (plastic biodegradability in aqueous medium), ISO 22404 (aerobic biodegradation of non-floating materials exposed to marine sediment), ISO 19679 (aerobic biodegradation of non-floating plastic materials in a seawater/sediment interface) and ISO 23977-1 (aerobic biodegradation of plastic materials exposed to seawater).

 

The basic configuration is also avalable as portable device: laptop + CO2 sensor + vessel (power supplied by the laptop).
